Question : What printers/plotters does SolidWorks support?

Answer : SolidWorks supports any printer for which there is a Windows driver available that is compatible with the operating system on which you have SolidWorks installed. SolidWorks Corporation does not create printer drivers. If you can not find a driver/or encounter problems with printing to a specific driver, you should contact the manufacturer of the printer/plotter and/or look for third party driver developers to find a driver that is fully compatible with your printer/plotter.

Question : What is the preferred or optimum hardware set up for SolidWorks (RAM, CPU, video card, etc)?

Answer : While SolidWorks does not make hardware recommendations, we do list known video card problems, the preferred O/S and minimum RAM and CPU requirements. See the system requirements page at

Question : Can I run both English and another language Operating System (OS) on my machine at the same time?

Answer : Yes, but it is important that the user understand what needs to be done:
To run SolidWorks in a foreign language, it is not sufficient to just set the regional settings of the operating system to the foreign language. This only changes a limited set of functions in the operating system such as dates, etc. To truly run SolidWorks in a foreign language, the user needs to have the full version of the foreign language operating system from Microsoft. If you install SolidWorks in Chinese, for example, on a Chinese Operating System, English is automatically installed as well. SolidWorks is able to switch between the two languages within the Operating System by going to ToolsOptionsSystem OptionsGeneral where there is an option to indicate to run the software in English.

Question : Can I have a more technical description of what a dual processor (utilizing multi threading) can do in SolidWorks?

Answer : Beginning with SolidWorks 98, documents are retrieved in multi-threaded mode. When you retrieve a (large) part/drawing/assembly, the document will immediately display the document in a View-Only state while the actual document with all components and features is being retrieved in the background. During the View-Only state, you can use all functions supported in the SolidWorks Viewer (Zooming, Rotation etc.) but you will not be able to switch to another document or start opening another document. After the retrieval of all necessary models is completed, SolidWorks will automatically switch to the normal edit state.
There are low level operations in SolidWorks' modeling algorithms which use multi-threading (e.g. Boolean, silhouettes, line generations, mass properties, body check). These operations become multi-threaded in SolidWorks operations like a cut-extrude or a boss. However, SolidWorks doesn't use the low-level modeling algorithms on a one-to-one basis, therefore the overall effect may be hard to determine based on the configuration of the body and the complexity of the topologies. The most obvious area of improvement the user can see is in mass properties and in body checking because those operations directly use the low level modeling algorithms. In general, the solving process used for parametric modeling is by nature very linear and cannot take full advantage of parallel processors.
Please note that SolidWorks does not do any specific benchmarking to determine speed gains in SolidWorks from a second processor. Certain operations will benefit form a multithreaded environment, but SolidWorks cannot provide any statistical information on such benefits at this time.

Question : Is it possible to run a foreign language version of SolidWorks on a machine running an English language operating system?

Answer : No. In order to run a foreign language version of SolidWorks, it is necessary to install it on the foreign operating system. Note that on a foreign operating system, you can run SolidWorks in the foreign language (if you choose to install it for that language during installation) or you can run in English by choosing "Use English Language" under Tools, Options, System Options, General. Also, keep in mind that all foreign language (and Educational) versions of SolidWorks will only run on machines equipped with a properly commissioned dongle (HASP security device).

Question : What does SolidWorks recommend for Virtual Memory settings?

Answer : We recommend that your Initial and Maximum size be set to at least 2 times the amount of the physical RAM on your machine.

Question : What version of Novell do I need to support long filenames?

Answer : This information has been supplied by Novell, Inc. and is not officially supported by SolidWorks Corporation. If you need additional information, please contact Novell, your Novell distributor, or visit the Novell web site at:
http://www.novell.com
Long filenames have been supported on Novell since Windows95 was released. You need to run at least Netware 3.1x. If you are running Netware 3.1x, you need to also load HPFS Name Space and the patches for Netware 3.1x from the Novell web site. If running Netware 4.1x, you need to load HPFS Long.

Question : Thumbnail graphics have stopped working, even though it is turned on in the Tools, Options, General. Why?

Answer : The thumbnail graphics are simply icons cached with the file and displayed in Windows Explorer by Microsoft. Microsoft decides when to update the cached icon information, and therefore when to change the display of the icons. In this case, it may be that you need to access the file to get the icons to update. For example, selecting the file in Windows Explorer or opening and saving the file usually fixes the problem.
Sometimes the registry location where the icon information is cached becomes corrupted. We do not know the cause of this problem. To see if this is the case, run the "regedit" command, and then expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, there must be a SldAssem.Document folder and an SLDPart.Document folder. Each folder must have a "shellexiconhandler" folder. If the "shellex" or "iconhandler" folder is missing, the thumbnail graphics will not function.
If this is the case, contact your local reseller/Technical Support and registry files will be provided. (An uninstall and reinstall of Solidworks should also fix the problem). A reboot will often be required to see the changes.

Question : Starting in SolidWorks 2000, SolidWorks is able to store "favorites" for hole types with the hole wizard. Where are these favorites saved?

Answer : The hole wizard favorites are stored in a Microsoft database in the data directory of your SolidWorks installation. The file name is "default.mdb"

Question : Where can I change the color of my model in Tools/Options?

Answer : Starting in SolidWorks 2000, to change the color of a model or feature with the Tools/Options dialogue, you must have an active document. When an active document is open, there is a choice in Tools/Options/Document Properties called "Colors" that becomes available.

Question : If I delete my SolidWorks registry, will I lose all my SolidWorks 2000 Hole Wizard favorites?

Answer : No. Unlike most settings and customization, the Hole Wizard favorites are not stored in the registry and will never be affected by having the registry deleted or becoming corrupt.

Question : Can you configure face or feature colors through Tools/Options/Color?

Answer : Only the color of the entire component can be controlled through this dialogue. To change a feature or face's color, RMB (Right Mouse Button) the face (or the face of the feature you wish to change) and select face of feature properties (as desired) from the menu.

Question : Does SolidWorks place a limit on the number of Custom Properties a file can have?

Answer : There is no SolidWorks specific limit to the number of custom properties.

Question : How can I prevent the Toolbars from popping on and off the screen when I open different file types?

Answer : This feature was intended to minimize the number of toolbars on the screen, and eliminates the toolbars that cannot be used for a specific file type (for example, the assembly toolbar in a part). To turn off this feature, simply choose Tools/Customize/Toolbars and uncheck "Auto activate document toolbars."

Question : Is it possible to change the sound played when during Collision Detection in an assembly?
